Urban Live Work

SoHo Tier Studios - Beneath the Fabric

Fall 2019

With the rise of industrial evolutions, patterns of work have changed. With an increased ability to telecommunicate and new developments in custom product manufacturing, ‘work’ has shifted from necessarily being located at a site distinct from home to commonly being located in direct proximity to home. In light of these shifts in US culture, Soho Tier Studios responds to the relationship between living and working in New York’s urban context.

Soho Tiers Studios is a mixed-use development that offers living and workspace for those in the fashion design industry. The design simultaneously functions as housing while revealing fashion design stages: Development, Production, and Exposure.

Living Network

Fairmount School of Art and Ecology - Network of Interdependent Systems

Fall 2020

The Fairmount School of Art + Ecology will be a network of interdependent systems that enhances the learning experience for Riverside's young minds.

Collaboration, critical thinking, and exploration become the core of this community guided through the integrated approach of STEAM. The design creates opportunities for students to engage cooperatively with one another in tailored settings that express connectivity. These opportunities become moments within this network of community that create a culture of teamwork, wonder, and discovery. The overall design focused on sustainability manifests into a well-balanced and captivating environment cultivating Riverside’s young minds.

Design for Integration

The Fairmount School of Art + Ecology focuses on incorporating sustainable design and passive strategies to provide solutions to current environmental issues and allow for future generations to do the same. The goal is to respond to Riverside’s hot, dry climate and ecological aspects to integrate an educational development that accommodates occupant comfort. This design responds to environmental issues and opportunities as this educational development will embody STEAM and display the connections between these studies.

Design for Ecology

The Fairmount School of Art + Ecology concentrates on understanding the local ecosystem, watersheds, and wildlife and responded appropriately through sustainability without hindering the natural state but instead enhancing it and improving it. This educational development site is a park of green space that sits by a lake, which also includes many trees and vegetation. The lake is a telltale sign of wildlife that also needs to be seriously considered. Most importantly, the design aims to accommodate and preserve the wildlife habitat and protect and create on-site ecosystems.

Design for Community

The design is dedicated to becoming a key component of the immediate community, the school district, and Riverside's city. The school serves as a cultural shift in the character of the city. Riverside emphasizes the Arts and Innovation; thus, this STEAM school embodies the relationship between these and displays it for the community.

Interstitial Theater

Threshold Theater - Stitched Experience

Spring 2020

Threshold Theater is a community theater center that exemplifies the integration of strong community, reinforced culture, and fostered learning realized through stitching together people, place, and activity.

This design sits amid Redlands’ historic district as well as the new developing city center, thus the theater has a unique opportunity to stitch together what Redlands was, currently is, and will be. Immediately surrounding the site are shops, restaurants, a future food court building, as well as Redlands’ iconic Historic Train Station.

Overall, the Threshold Theater of Redlands offers the opportunity for the city to express its identity through social interaction and performing arts.

This community theater center for Redlands becomes a part of a diverse city that loves to manifest itself in different ways.

Lastly, the Threshold Theater is a compilation of connected spaces that create interstitial zones that stitch together people, place, and activity.

The City of Redlands is one the best examples of a city that prides itself on its engagement with its local and regional community. It has long been known as a center for the region’s citrus history and its turn of the century architectural landmarks, including the Historic Train Station. The city focuses much of its energy on bringing people together, from its Thursday Night Market to experiencing a show at the Redlands Bowl, the United States’ oldest, continuously running free outdoor music festival. The Redlands Theater Festival is one of the top tourist attractions in San Bernardino County. Recently, the City of Redlands has undertaken an initiative to revitalize and expand its downtown district. This design demonstrates a sensitivity for the place, site and history of theater and Redlands with a broad-minded investigation of the future that community theater plays within society.
